Pipe handling & tripping
Racking and latching stands from the monkeyboard during trips, in step with the driller. Fast, clean trips save rig time and keep the floor crew safe.
Four years on drilling rigs, from roustabout to the monkeyboard. Now working toward Assistant Driller.
Every rung on this rig was earned on the job. Read it from the top: the next position first, then each step that got me here.
Preparing now: enrolling in IADC WellSharp well control (Driller level) and working closely with the driller on every tour.
Working the derrick and the mud system: handling pipe up the mast, watching pits and fluids, and keeping drilling equipment inspected and running.
Rig-floor crew on tongs, slips and elevators. Rigged up and down drilling equipment, mixed drilling fluids, and helped train new floor hands.
Joined EDC as a roustabout. Installed and repaired pipe equipment and maintained drilling tools. Promoted to Floorman after about two years as a roustabout (NDC, then EDC).
First rig job. General rig-site support, equipment moves and rig maintenance.
What I do on every tour, and why it matters to the crew.
Racking and latching stands from the monkeyboard during trips, in step with the driller. Fast, clean trips save rig time and keep the floor crew safe.
Running the pits and mud pumps: mixing chemicals, checking mud weight, watching pit levels and returns. The pits are where a well first shows trouble, so they never go unwatched.
Tongs, slips and elevators on connections and trips. Rigging drilling equipment up and down between wells.
Daily inspection and maintenance of drilling equipment, so the rig stays running and problems get caught early.
Trained in rigging, lifting operations, banksman signalling and working at height, which is the daily reality of derrick work.
STOP Card observations, H2S gas testing, confined space entry and advanced fire fighting. I follow the procedures and speak up when something is unsafe.
An Assistant Driller runs the floor crew and backs up the driller. Most of that work builds on what I already do every day.
